Short answer

An open terrarium has an open mouth and is used for plants that prefer dry air, such as cacti and succulents. A closed terrarium has a lid; the humidity circulates naturally inside, so it is used with plants that prefer humidity, such as moss and ferns. If a terrarium with succulents is kept closed, the plants may rot. The care method depends on the plant used.

How to Care for a Terrarium, and How Often Should You Water It?

Short answer

Open terrariums with cacti and succulents are generally watered every 2–4 weeks, giving a small amount of water to the base of the plants without wetting the soil. Water should not accumulate at the bottom of the glass. Place the terrarium in a brightly lit location but where the midday sun does not heat the glass. Overwatering is the most common cause of plant death in terrariums; if in doubt, postpone watering.

Give sparing water. Use a teaspoon, syringe, or spray bottle to water only the base of the plants; excess water cannot escape since the terrarium does not have drainage holes.
Adjust the lighting. Choose a spot near a window but not directly in the midday sun; glass heats up quickly in the sun.
Clean the glass. If condensation or stains appear on the inside surface, wipe them away with a soft, dry cloth.
Remove any decaying parts. Immediately remove any softened or blackened leaves; rot can spread to neighboring plants.
Turn it over. Rotate the terrarium a quarter turn every few weeks to prevent the plants from leaning towards the light.
