Short answer
Every cactus is a succulent, but not every succulent is a cactus. The distinguishing feature of cacti is the areole: small, cushion-shaped buds from which spines, hairs, and flowers emerge. Plants like aloe, sanseveria, and milkweed, while storing water, lack areoles and are therefore not considered cacti. Consequently, their care differs somewhat.
This difference is also important in care. Most cacti store water in their stems and require plenty of light; leafy succulents retain water in their leaves, and some adapt better to partial shade. For a low-light environment, a hardy plant like Sansevieria is a better choice than a cactus; options can be found on the houseplants page.
Short answer
Cacti should be watered abundantly after the soil has completely dried out: this usually means once every 2–3 weeks in summer and once a month or less frequently in winter. They should be placed in front of a window that receives direct or very bright light for at least a few hours a day. Cacti are drought-tolerant, but not overwatered; if in doubt, postpone watering.
Most cacti can bloom under suitable conditions, but this depends on the plant's age, species, and whether it has had a cool, dry dormancy period in winter. Columnar varieties usually only bloom when they reach a large size; therefore, you shouldn't expect a cactus you buy for home to bloom quickly. If you are looking for a flowering potted plant , flowering plants are a better starting point.
Cacti are a low-maintenance, long-lasting gift choice and a popular option for desks, student rooms, and offices. Other options for workplaces can be found on our office flowers page. Since the thorns pose a risk of injury to young children and pets, it's best to place the cactus out of their reach.

Cacti should be watered when the soil is completely dry; usually every 2–3 weeks in summer, and once a month or less frequently in winter. Water should not be left at the bottom of the pot; cacti are most damaged by overwatering.
The cactus should be placed in front of a window that receives direct or very bright light for a few hours a day. If there is insufficient light, the stem will thin and the plant will bend towards the light.
For those seeking large, upright forms, RoseBox features a giant glass cactus garden with Arizona Cereus, Nevada blue stem, and Polaskia Chichipe cacti. Cereus and Polaskia species grow tall over time and develop a tree-like appearance.
