Dendrobium (Bamboo Orchid): What it is, Care, and RoseBox Models

Dendrobium is a genus of orchids known in Türkiye as bamboo orchids because their upright, segmented stems resemble bamboo. On this page, we honestly explain what this genus is, how it differs from butterfly orchids, its care, and the models available at RoseBox: the selection is currently small, so we are also showing similar options.

Short answer

Dendrobium, whose name comes from the Greek word meaning "living in a tree," is a genus of orchids often called bamboo orchids due to its upright, segmented stem. Dendrobium Orchid Price

In this category, the price is determined by the number of branches and the presentation: a 2-branch arrangement in a basket is the most affordable, a 2-branch arrangement in a stone pot is mid-range, and a 4-branch arrangement in a gold metal pot is the most expensive. Since the selection is small, Phalaenopsis models are also a good alternative for different budgets.

What is Dendrobium, and why is it called Bamboo Orchid?

Short answer

Dendrobium is a large genus of orchids that grows naturally in a region stretching from Asia to Australia and has over a thousand species. Its name comes from the Greek words dendron (tree) and bios (life); in nature, they live clinging to tree trunks. Because their stems are upright and segmented, they are called bamboo orchids.

The most common species in floriculture are hybrids that produce butterfly orchid-like flowers on long, upright branches; this group is briefly called "den-phal". Dendrobium nobile, which produces small flower clusters from its nodes and requires a cool dormancy period in winter, is a species preferred more by plant enthusiasts.

In floral terminology, this orchid is often associated with strength, resilience, and elegance; its slender yet robust stem gives rise to this description. Its bamboo-like form also makes it suitable for modern and simple decors.

The Difference Between Bamboo Orchid and Phalaenopsis

Dendrobium Phalaenopsis
Body Upright, segmented, bamboo-like. Short; broad leaves at the base
Leaf Thin, arranged along the body Thick, wide, shiny
Flower Smaller, in clusters Large, flat, arranged along the branch.
Lighting requirements Furthermore, it tolerates the morning sun. Brilliant but indirect.
Flower season Usually 4–8 weeks Usually 2-3 months
Area covered Narrow and vertical wider

For a smaller space and a modern look, Dendrobium orchids are more suitable, while Phalaenopsis orchids offer a longer flowering period and a wider range of colors. You can view all the varieties side-by-side on our orchid varieties page.

How to Care for Dendrobium?

Short answer

This orchid requires plenty of light, but not harsh; an east-facing window is ideal. The root environment should dry out completely between waterings, and watering should be reduced in winter. Cool nights promote flowering. Do not cut off the stems after flowering; they store water and nutrients, and in some species, will bloom again.

  1. Lighting: Choose a brighter location than the Phalaenopsis; morning sun is suitable, protect from midday sun.
  2. Watering: Water when the root environment is completely dry; generally once a week in summer, and less frequently in winter. Do not leave water standing at the base.
  3. Temperature: Room temperature during the day and a few degrees cooler at night promote flowering; keep away from radiators.
  4. Stems: Do not cut off old, deciduous stems if they are healthy and firm; you can remove any that are wrinkled and dried out from the base.
  5. Propagation: If a small plant called a "keiki" forms on the stem along with its roots, you can separate it and transfer it to a separate pot when the roots reach a few centimeters.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dendrobium and Bamboo Orchids

At RoseBox, as of October 7, 2026, 3 bamboo orchid models are sold between 2,320 TL and 4,990 TL. The 2-stem model is the most affordable, while the 4-stem arrangement in a gold metal pot is the most expensive.

It is a genus of orchids with over a thousand species, growing in a region stretching from Asia to Australia. Due to its upright and segmented stem, it is known as the bamboo orchid in Türkiye; in nature, it lives by clinging to tree trunks.

The name comes from the Greek words dendron, meaning tree, and bios, meaning life, and means "living in a tree." In the language of flowers, it is generally associated with strength, resilience, and elegance due to its slender but sturdy trunk.

Bamboo orchids are a type with upright, segmented stems and small flower clusters; they require more light. Butterfly orchids (Phalaenopsis), on the other hand, have broad leaves and large flowers; their flowers generally remain open for a longer period.

In suitable conditions, this orchid's flowers usually remain open for 4–8 weeks. A bright, cool location away from heaters and air conditioners will extend this period; with proper care, the plant can bloom again.

The easiest way is to separate the baby plants, called keiki, that spontaneously form on the stem. When the roots of the baby plant reach a few centimeters, they can be cut with clean scissors and planted in orchid bark in a small pot; they should be watered sparingly for the first few weeks.

Yes. RoseBox sells potted and basket models of this variety; orders placed before 5 PM are delivered the same day to all 39 districts of Istanbul. Delivery to other cities is via cargo or local florists.
