What does the number of stems mean in an orchid, and how does it change things?

Short answer

In orchids, a stem is the long flower stalk on which the flowers are arranged. A single Phalaenopsis plant usually produces 1–2 stems; therefore, most models with 3 or more stems consist of multiple orchid plants in the same pot. The number of stems determines the number of flowers, their fullness, size, and price.

The number of branches determines not only the display but also the placement. While a two-branched orchid fits on a desk or bedside table, arrangements with ten or more branches require a larger surface or reception counter. The number of flowers on each branch varies depending on the species: Phalaenopsis orchids typically have 6–12 large flowers, while multi-floral orchids have many smaller flowers.

Keep in mind that in addition to the number of branches, the species also changes the appearance: the same 4 branches create a cascading waterfall in the Cascade orchid, while in the Bellisimo they form an upright, large-flowered stance. How is the care of multi-branched orchids different?

Short answer

In multi-branched orchids, there are usually multiple plants in the pot; the roots of each plant will dry out separately. The most important differences are checking whether water is accumulating at the bottom of decorative pots, watering only sparingly to the roots of each plant rather than the entire arrangement, and removing any wilting plants.

Gently part any surface moss or decorative covering to check if the root environment is dry.
In metal, concrete, or glass containers without drainage holes, add a small amount of water; if water remains at the bottom after a few hours, empty it.
Check the support stakes as the branches grow longer; heavily flowering branches are prone to toppling over.
Once a plant has finished flowering, you can separate it and continue caring for it in a separate pot before the others bloom.

Orchid orders placed before 5 PM in Istanbul's 39 districts are delivered by hand the same day, regardless of the number of stems. Delivery to all 81 provinces of Türkiye is available via contracted courier services and local florists; delivery times outside of these provinces vary depending on the address. Delivery and a note card are included free of charge.
